YAKKUM Hospital is disability friendly, easily accessible, and quick to receive services at our hospital. National Competition for Health Facility Innovation towards Disability Inclusive Indonesia

YAKKUM’s Supports for Disability Inclusive Health Governance in Republic of Indonesia

drg. Kriswidiati conveyed this during the Inclusive Hospital Tour on Friday (6/9) at Panti Wilasa Citarum Hospital, Semarang, which will be followed by a webinar on Health Services towards Disability Inclusive Indonesia the next day.

The tour was intended to provide direct insight into health service practices that have been implemented at one of YAKKUM’s hospital. . YAKKUM hopes that through the webinar it can produce documentation of policy discussions and inclusive service models which will later become an important reference as well as a contribution to the efforts of various parties to achieve inclusive health services by 2030.

The series of activities are part of the culmination of the event, namely the National Competition for Health Facility Innovation towards Disability-Inclusive Indonesia. The competition was initiated with the aim of strengthening and expanding health services that can be accessed by people with and without disabilities throughout Indonesia.

This is a form of YAKKUM’s support to the Indonesian government in the context of implementing the Disability Inclusive Health Governance roadmap prepared by the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia since 2019.

Disability Friendly Hospital

Endah Margya Suksmawati, S.IP., M.M., Head of the Social Rehabilitation Division of the Semarang City Social Service, appreciated the role of YAKKUM’s Panti Wilasa Citarum Hospital in supporting Semarang towards an inclusive city.

“In terms of accessibility and supporting facilities, it is very easy to access, the service human resources are quite friendly and they understand services for people with disabilities.”

Appreciation was also given for the availability of resources in realizing inclusive health services and being able to network in the Semarang city area. For example, 600 KG of rice assistance, organizing training, providing assistive devices given to the Social Affairs Office and it’s distribution.

Some workshops have been facilitated by Panti Wilasa Citarum; we hope that all hospitals owned by YAKKUM will continue to progress towards disability-friendly hospitals and inclusive health services. This includes increasing the quota for the involvement of people with disabilities to work in hospitals.

  • Recomendations

Some recommendations related to the hospital’s commitment to organizing disability inclusive health services include:

    1. Finding barriers that exist in hospitals in providing inclusive services for disabilities. Including asking inputs from the community to strengthen hospital service.
    2. Strive to eliminate barriers, at least reduce them.
    3. The principle of inclusion does not mean “the same” but “according to needs”, so it provides a different approach to patients with disabilities.
“The three are reflected on whether they have been well facilitated. Thank you for your attention and invitation to us.”

YAKKUM Hospital Trusted by the Public

For Dr. dr. Mochamad Abdul Hakam, SP.PD., Head of Semarang City Health Office, what Panti Wilasa Citarum YAKKUM Hospital has done in Semarang is a success in branding it as an inclusive and disability-friendly hospital.

“Especially when people with disabilities can access, be picked up by security, assisted from the registration desk, etc.”

The various forms of disability-friendly hospital services are familiar, and the testimonials given by patients are an encouragement that the people of Semarang do not need to worry.

However, in the Special Region of Yogyakarta, the achievement of attention to the issue of disability inclusion health services can be said to be “outstanding.” In addition, it’s necessary to pay attention to the risk of mental health problems, which has the potential to increase during climate change (El Nino)

Access to health services can be fulfilled by YAKKUM. In theory, inclusive health services have worked well. “If you build a hospital, it must have strong branding in inclusive services,” he added.

“YAKKUM’s hospitals have gained the trust of the public. The quality of service must be improved.”

Bringing Access to Health Services Closer

Observing the disability inclusive health services of YAKKUM, Elhamangto Zuhdan, M.K.M Head of Health Services Division of the Central Java Provincial Health Office saw how YAKKUM is trying to bring access to health services closer to the community, especially people with disabilities.

“Access is getting closer. The hospital is very supportive and in line with health services that are friendly to people with disabilities.”

These health services can develop according to the nature of the hospital leadership which influences the process of providing supporting services, convenience for the blind, at certain points providing easy access, crossover services, there are no barriers for all people including people with disabilities to get access, especially services at the hospital.

  • Collaboration

Continuity in services is still needed. Not only about providing facilities, but also overseeing how the program runs consistently, regularly, centered on the needs of people with disabilities.

Law 19 states that there are equal rights, but it requires a process. For those who have received it, then be independent, and they can get optimal services. The need for health services for people with disabilities can be utilized optimally in all hospitals in Central Java.

Regarding hospitals with difficult geography, the Semarang Provincial Health Office uses the strategy of Community Health Centers, Assistant Community Health Centers (Pustu), and Integrated Health Posts whose services are adjusted to the human life cycle as an effort to get closer to the family as the basis of primary health services.

Inclusive Service, Open Service

From the perspective of the Christian Service Fellowship for Health in Indonesia or PELKESI represented by Dr. Daniel Budi Wibowo, M.Kes, as the chairman, conveyed that health services are holistic services, something that unites. Therefore, in order to take away that can be shared with other hospitals, it is to remain faithful in advocating for inclusive health services for its member hospitals.

  • PELKESI Points

For PERLESI, there are 5 points that need to be improved:

    1. There is a policy from the hospital owner that health services must provide the rights of the disabled group.
    2. The policy is followed by action, providing facilities that can help the same health services for the disabled. The disabled group has the right to equal registration and services.
    3. Qualified human resources.
    4. There are alternative communication facilities, which support health services including sign language skills. PELKESI has conducted training with YAKKUM several times.
    5. Availability of medical devices, both inside and outside the hospital. Each city has disability-friendly transportation facilities, which allow the disabled group to go to the hospital. Collaboration is needed between health facilities, local governments, and public transportation providers. This also includes collaboration between health facilities, local governments, and philanthropic groups that provide facilities.
“Inclusive health services are not exclusive, but open to the entire community. Including philanthropic groups taking part.”

Our approach is the church, we support the church to have accessible facilities for the disabled. Even further, in November we will create tutors for children with special needs so that they can take care of themselves independently.

Hospital Without Walls for the Disabled

The existence of Laws, Regulations in Lieu of Laws, Government Regulations, and others is a general illustration that the government has provided regulations that are a driving force for all parties to ensure the fulfillment of the rights of the disabled. Drg. Farichah Hanum, M.Kes from the Central Java Indonesian Hospital Association (PERSI) said that the accreditation standards have also touched on the rights of patients and families, including those with disabilities.

Although on the one hand, the fulfillment of these patient rights is easy, there are several challenges that still need to be overcome. The fulfillment of the rights of patients and families has been regulated by law. The PERSI Award is a trigger for hospital innovations to be more inclusive. So that the collaborations that are established within the framework of health services to be more inclusive can provide greater trust.

“Fourth, health services that are proactive, hospitals without walls for the disabled, in terms of financing will be more effective and efficient through empowerment for friends with disabilities, that’s amazing!”

Inclusive Is a Process

Starting from the concept of inclusive, if examined in depth is an absorption from a foreign language, inclusive. “An adjective where the disabled become comfortable, accept, and enjoy a pleasant service ecosystem,” explained Jonna Aman Damanik, Commissioner of the National Disability Commission (KND).

Meanwhile, for Jonna when talking about health services, how a hospital becomes comfortable “nice,” will see how all the differences of people served can be facilitated by the hospital.

“Don’t make inclusive a goal, because it’s ‘tiring’, because that’s a trait.”

The key to how a hospital becomes inclusive is to faithfully process to achieve this goal. If an individual becomes inclusive, then the system where the person is located will work inclusively.

Jonna appreciates what YAKKUM has done as a good practice and encourages it to have more similar good practices. Economic initiatives from people with disabilities are extraordinary. The National Disability Commission is discussing initiative documents from the disabled community.

  • Inclusive Principle

    Inclusive Principle:

    1. Reduce stigma. We cannot eliminate stigma but at least eliminate it.
    2. Accessibility. How is the hospital accessible? Providing accessibility is a necessity. What YAKKUM did was an initiative from the community, namely civil society. But don’t forget the state must respond and facilitate. The government is obliged to provide.
    3. Budget collaboration.
    4. Community participation in this case people with disabilities.

At least with these four (4) points it will facilitate the creation of a comfortable ecosystem for people with disabilities.

“I will bring this good practice to the Ministry of Health, what YAKKUM has done inspires the Ministry of Health’s policy on inclusive health services, good for the roadmap for inclusive health services to be realized in 2045”

Learning from Maluku about Posyandu Prima, the regulation is good but how to inspire it to the household requires our concern. Inclusive is not a goal, but it can be achieved when we are loyal to the process.

The existence of policies and roadmaps for various parties to realize inclusive services is a reminder. That the next effort is monitoring that prioritizes the active role of multiple parties.

As part of the organizational mechanism, the YAKKUM Board conducted monitoring of the implementation of the strategic plan carried out by YAKKUM CHPM units, namely CD Bethesda YAKKUM, YAKKUM Rehabilitation Centre and YAKKUM Emergency Unit during the first semester of 2022.

From a series of monitoring to WPA assisted groups and Yayasan Kebaya (as a partner of CD Bethesda), the Market for the poor and Womenpreneurs for plastic YEU cooperation programs in Palu and vocational training and apprenticeship participants and the Self Help Groups community of people with psychosocial disabilities supported by PRY, it was concluded that the 5 strategic issues of learning leadership, systems and tools, asset management, competitive advantage and networking and partnerships could be implemented with significant achievements such as knowledge management, increased cooperation between units and with the church, which will be shown in more detail in their respective reports.

Some of the testimonies recorded in this 2022 monitoring can be seen as follows:

Rev. Simon Julianto, Chairman of the YAKKUM Board of Directors

During a visit to the YAKKUM Rehabilitation Centre, the First Chairman of the YAKKUM Board said, “I learned from meeting these disabled friends, I realized that each person in this world has their own disability, this makes us all realize that all people are equal and must have the same opportunities; we must not just surrender but continue to try and have concrete plans and steps to do positive things in our lives; thus our perspective on our future is bright.”

Rully Malai (Kebaya Foundation)

With the support of CD Bethesda who facilitated us with the institution’s strategic plan until 2023, there are at least 3 long-term benefits felt by Yayasan Kebaya, namely:

  1. Increased institutional capacity in terms of financial management.
  2. development of human resource management so that our staff/members can become advocates for identity card management for friends who do not have one.
  3. Becoming a Community Based Organization (CBO) for the transgender community that focuses on capacity building for communities in this network.

Regarding #makeinclusionpossible, in September RS Panti Rahayu coordinated with the Head of Penawangan II Community Health Centre and Bologarang Village Health Cadres regarding an MOU to assist the Bologarang Village disability community.

YAKKUM, as a health service institution, is committed to being involved in improving the quality of health services by supporting national and international health commemoration days. Such as World Mental Health Day which is celebrated every October 10 and National Health Day which is celebrated every November 12, 2021. The support provided by YAKKUM includes various activities involving its units and the assisted community, in this case young people.

In addition, as a matter of necessity, YAKKUM is also committed to becoming an inclusive health institution. Currently, YAKKUM Hospital is committed to expanding the understanding of disability-inclusive development by involving its entire community to concretely become an inclusive health service provider.

In 2021, YAKKUM held an inclusive hospital competition as a method to declare that the 12 YAKKUM hospitals have a commitment and concrete practice to become more disability inclusive health service providers. As well as giving awards to YAKKUM hospital units that are in the process of realizing disability-inclusive health service commitments.

Of the 12 YAKKUM hospitals that became the top three (3), among them were Panti Rahayu Purwodadi Hospital as the first winner with disability-friendly medical facilities and services. Second place was Panti Wilasa Dr. Cipto Semarang with its caregiver and fasttrack services. Meanwhile, Emanuel Klampok-Banjarnegara Hospital won the third place with facilities and networking with other institutions that also focus on serving people with disabilities.

Inclusive Churches Training

Inclusive Churches Training

Some of us may have attended an online worship service and there is already an area where there is a Sign Language Interpreter (JBI) who is good at moving his hands as sign language. What makes sign language increasingly popular in church?

YAKKUM as a church-based organization engaged in the field of public health and humanitarianism, in one of the missions of the YAKKUM Strategic Plan 2021-2026 is to organize holistic and inclusive health services. As an effort to strengthen partnerships in strengthening inclusive services, the church as one of YAKKUM Hospital’s partners needs to be embraced to better understand disability issues and inclusion strategies.

One of the series of Inclusive Church Training conducted by YAKKUM was held at the GKJ Synod on Tuesday-Wednesday, February 6-7, 2024.

The Church of Inclusion

Disability theology is a new branch of theology. This theology became widespread at the beginning of the 21st century and has grown rapidly until now. Disability theology is a way of theologizing from the perspective of disability. It dismantles ordinary theology that often uses standards of normality and perfection by re-reading traditional church teachings and dogmas and developing Christology, creation theology, soteriology, body spirituality, eschatology, ecclesiology from the perspective of disability (Theology of Disability, Research and Development Department of GKI SW Central Java, 2023).

Ecumenical Disability Advocates Network

The World Council of Churches at its 8th session in Harare, Zimbabwe decided to establish EDAN (Ecumenical Disability Advocates Network) because it realized the importance of the existence of an ecumenical network to focus on disability issues; EDAN together with YAKKUM agreed to follow up on the findings of the Baseline Study on Best Practices in terms of Disability Inclusion in Church Life.

The Baseline study which was held in several countries showed a gap in the lack of knowledge of church officials and congregations regarding disability even though on the one hand most church respondents saw the importance of the issue being considered by the church. Therefore, YAKKUM organized an inclusive church training.

Teologi of Disability

The training was designed to study and use the theology of disability compiled by theologians and academics in the Coaching and Cadre Institution (LPP) network of the Javanese Christian Churches (GKJ) Synod and Indonesia Christian Churches (GKI) SW Central Java, YAKKUM’s empirical experience through disability rehabilitation and inclusion services in hospitals, education units and public health and humanitarian service units together with various disability organization networks.

Through this Inclusive Church Training YAKKUM strives to:

  1. Provide awareness and basic knowledge about disability inclusion in the church to the target participants.
  2. Share information about and build networks with communities of people with disabilities in areas where churches want to develop inclusion services.
  3. Meaningful involvement of people with disabilities in church and community life.

General Assembly Act Alliance

YAKKUM Jadi Penylenggara General Assembly ACT Alliance 2024 di Yogyakarta

General Assembly and Yogyakarta

The 4th General Assembly of ACT Alliance (Action by Churches Together) will be held in Yogyakarta on October 28 – November 1, 2024. Related to the event, on Monday (18/03), the Board of Christian Foundation for Public Health (YAKKUM), Rev. Simon Julianto, met with the Governor of Yogyakarta, Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X at Gedhong Wilis, Kepatihan Complex, Yogyakarta. The meeting with Ngarso Dalem (the way to address the Sultan) was to request direction and advice for the preparation of the event as well as to confirm his presence in the Opening and Welcoming Dinner.

Reporting from jogjaprov.go.id, Rev. Simon conveyed Sri Sultan’s message to showcase the local aspects of Yogyakarta in the ACT Alliance General Assembly. “We were asked to show the uniqueness of Jogja, because local aspects are also important to show, so that they can get to know more about Jogja,” he said.

This General Assembly was inspired by the philosophy of angkringan (a small food stall on the side of the road, where many people usually gather and discuss something other than eating), the good practices of interfaith cooperation in Yogyakarta and the independence of local churches in Indonesia to continue humanitarian services in the transition to post-colonial independence. This is also the reason why Yogyakarta was chosen as the venue for the General Assembly of ACT Alliance in Asia.

Hope in Action: Together for Justice

This year’s ACT Alliance General Assembly is themed “Hope in Action – Together for Justice” and will be held for 5 days, October 28 – November 1, 2024 at the Royal Ambarrukmo Hotel and preceded by a 2-day Youth General Assembly, October 26 – 27, 2024.

It is hoped that the 4th General Assembly will become a monumental global event for leaders, practitioners, field workers from around the world to discuss and collaborate as a joint effort to strengthen justice and solidarity in humanity. At least 400 delegates from 127 countries will attend the 2024 General Assembly.

ACT Alliance is an alliance of 150 church-based humanitarian and development service organizations in 127 countries (actalliance.org). ACT Alliance was established by the World Council of Churches in 2010 for humanitarian affairs, development and advocacy.

As stated by the Chairman of the YAKKUM Board when meeting the Governor of Yogyakarta, the focus of the General Assembly activities will be humanitarian assistance, climate change, and peace and security to support local communities. In addition, religious activities will also be held at the Gondokusuman cultural heritage church. “Later there will also be a religious event centered on the cultural heritage church. There will be various traditions such as gamelan and rituals that are very close to the traditions of Jogja which are packaged with good worship,” said Simon.

Representing YAKKUM, which was chosen as the organizer of the ACT Alliance General Assembly, Rev. Simon said that his organization has made preparations starting from the formation of the committee to meetings with several related parties. He added, “Then we are now also in the process of fundraising and hopefully the implementation can run smoothly.”

Some time earlier, YAKKUM and ACT Alliance also held a meeting at the YAKKUM Head Office to discuss the preparation of the General Assembly. The meeting was attended by (left-right) Arshinta (YAKKUM), Minnie Anne Mata-Calub (ACT Governing Board), Rev. Simon (YAKKUM), Peni (YAKKUM), Rita (YAKKUM), Rudelmar Bueno de Faria (ACT Secretary General), along with AAC (Assembly Advisory Committee) Odongo, Patricia Mungcal, Charlotte Belot. Rapid Assessment Of The Needs Of Inclusive Communities Affected By The Central Java Flood Disaster (Demak)

Inclusive Needs

Following the flooding in Demak, Central Java in the first quarter of 2024, the YAKKUM Emergency Unit (YEU) Yogyakarta conducted a rapid assessment of the inclusive needs of disaster-affected communities.

The objective of this survey is to ascertain the needs of vulnerable groups and communities. The data collected through this survey will subsequently be shared with relevant stakeholders. In addition, the data will inform the development of YEU’s response programme, ensuring alignment with community needs and institutional capacity.

While there is no obligation to participate in the rapid assessment, respondents’ identities will be kept confidential.

Potential Persons with Disabilities

The implementation of disaster surveys related to inclusive issues also involved Ozy and Utha, persons with potential disabilities assisted by the Community Health Improvement Unit (UPKM) of Panti Wilasa Citarum YAKKUM Hospital in Semarang. They are individuals with intellectual disabilities who have been members of Roemah Difabel/Community of Friends of Difabel Semarang. Both have participated in several training programmes to enhance their capabilities. These include leadership and organising training conducted by YAKKUM-BfdW.

National Conference on Women and Inclusive Society

The Ministry of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection (P3A) with its partners held the 2024 Women’s National Conference (Munas) in Badung, Bali with the theme “Women for Mother Earth”. YAKKUM was present there as one of the many partners in national development, especially towards an inclusive society.

Self-Development for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

According to Karina, a person with psychosocial disabilities from LIDI NTB said that she felt inspired by the enthusiasm of the other women. Although she has just become the treasurer of the Swabantu Group in her village, Karina wants to continue to develop herself and fight for the rights of persons with disabilities.

In line with that, Wisnu, as the person in charge of the DIGNITY Program in NTB, emphasized the importance of activities such as this Women’s National Conference because it can increase the confidence of people with psychosocial disabilities who often experience discrimination and stigma.

DIGNITY

The DIGNITY or Disability Inclusion Through Strengthening Local to National Policy and Capacity program carried out by PRY is an Australia-Indonesia collaboration that focuses on psychosocial issues, access to employment and entrepreneurship and political participation of people with disabilities. This program is implemented by PRY in seven (7) provinces namely North Sumatra, Central Java, Banten, NTT, NTB, West Sulawesi and Southwest Papua by cooperating with eight (8) local partners and ministries.

A Moment of Meaningful Participation

Minister of of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection of the Republic of Indonesia, Bintang Puspayoga emphasized the importance of increasing the role of women in government, empowering women in a sustainable manner, and stopping violence against women and children, including women with disabilities from all elements. “National Conference 2024 is an important moment for Indonesian women to unite and strengthen their voices”. Here, the Minister of P3A also delivered 9 national agendas for women, disabilities, and other marginalized groups to women’s representatives from all over Indonesia.

This event is an important moment to realize meaningful participation from Indonesian women. The results of the 2024 Women’s National Conference will be handed over as input for RPJMN, Renstra and regional planning documents.

The two (2) day event from Friday – Saturday (19-20/4/24) at Balai Budaya Giri Nata Mandala, Badung Government Centre, Bali was attended by 1500 participants from 263 districts and 35 provinces.

RS Ramah Difabel

Melihat paparan dan tayangan YAKKUM mengenai pelayanan kesehatan inkusif disabilitas, Endah Margya Suksmawati, S.IP., M.M., Kepala Bidang Rehabilitasi Sosial Dinas Sosial Kota Semarang mengapresiasi peran RS Panti Wilasa Citarum YAKKUM mendukung Semarang menuju kota inklusif.

Dekatkan Akses Layanan Kesehatan

Mencermati pelayanan kesehatan inklusi disabilitas YAKKUM, Elhamangto Zuhdan, M.K.M Kepala Bidang Pelayanan Kesehatan Dinas Kesehatan Provinsi Jawa Tengah melihat bagaimana YAKKUM berupaya mendekatkan akses layanan kesehatan bagi masyarakat khususnya penyandang disabilitas.

Pelayanan Inklusif, Pelayanan Terbuka

Hospital Without Wall Untuk Kaum Disabilitas

Tetapi jangan lupa Negara harus respond an memfasilitasi. Pemerintah wajib menyediakan.
    3. Kolaborasi anggaran.

National Consultation on Church and Disability: Building an Inclusive Fellowship and Serving Together as God’s Co-Workers

Thanks to YAKKUM, always at the forefront of public Welcome Speech of the Chairman of PGI IX

“Thank you  to YAKKUM, as “a biological child” of the Javanese Christian Churches, as it is always at the forefront of health and humanitarian services.” This was conveyed by Rev. Gomar Gultom, the Chairman of the Communion of Churches in Indonesia (Chairman of PGI) at the opening of the National Consultation on Churches and Disabilities: Building an Inclusive Fellowship and Serving Together as God’s Co-Workers on June 12-16, 2024 at Arjuna Hotel Yogyakarta.

The Fellowship of Churches in Indonesia (PGI) together with the Christian Foundation for Public Health (YAKKUM) as the host of the event, together with the PGI Men’s Communication Forum (FKPKB) and the National Commission on Disability (KND) initiated the event. The 3-day event was attended by at least 75 PGI member church leaders, 3 government agencies, and 30 Synods, and PGI partner institutions.

YAKKUM and Disability Inclusion

YAKKUM has rarely appeared in PGI forums, not because it is positioned as an outsider. In fact, in YAKKUM’s work meeting reports before the Foundation Law, almost every formal coordination always had the PGI present to provide direction. It is a joy to have the task of being the hostess because it illustrates that YAKKUM is part of the PGI.

“Moreover, what is currently being promoted in the current Konas is an integral part of our mandate, namely to bring diaconal services to be inclusive. If it is inclusive, it must bring all forms of service to be aware of disability. Many of our programs are geared towards disability. We have many memberships in that field, and we want to expand by involving our parent churches.” Said Rev. Simon Julianto, Chairman of the YAKKUM Board.

YAKKUM is already building an “inclusive church” with local churches. The hope is that in the future, through the conference, all churches in Indonesia will also become inclusive.

Real Action

On the other hand, the National Commission on Disability (KND) represented by Jonna Aman Damanik said, “since 2002 I have made small practices in churches. I do disability mainstreaming work in the region. Disability inclusion is a trait, to make everyone comfortable, to make everyone participate.”

There is a sense of equality, justice that is evident from the theme of the National Conference of Churches with Disabilities. “I had a small discussion with Rev. Helen. The tough challenges of the church in the future must start with real action.” Jonna said. It is hoped that the National Conference can produce communiqués or joint agreements that can later be brought to the PGI General Assembly.

Networking to Realize Disability Friendly Church

Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwana X, Governor of the Special Region of Yogyakarta, represented by Dr. Sukamto, S.H, M.H. as Expert Staff of the Governor of Special of Yogyakarta said that persons with disabilities have the same rights to obtain and enjoy facilities in carrying out worship in the Church. The church as a social institution plays an important role in shaping society’s view of various groups and individuals. The church must also be an agent of change in forming an inclusive, friendly community and reducing stigma against people with disabilities.

“Through the application of the values of love, justice and openness, the church needs to create an environment that supports and respects human diversity including people with disabilities. So that the Church is able to become an agent of positive change, shaping a world where every individual is accepted and valued, regardless of their physical or mental condition.” said Dr. Sukamto.

Being an inclusive church means realizing a church that is increasingly embracing and open to the involvement of many parties. This includes providing disability-friendly facilities, medical and social support. Ensuring that people with disabilities are recognized, valued as an integral part of the church community. The church is responsible for ensuring that all members of the congregation, including those with disabilities, can fully participate in church life.

The Special Region of Yogyakarta Regional Government through Regional Regulation No. 5 of 2022 concerning the implementation of respect, protection and fulfillment of the rights of persons with disabilities, strives to realize the fulfillment of the rights of persons with disabilities. “Let us collaborate to develop networks to realize a disability-friendly church,” Dr. Sukamto said in his speech.

Mainstreaming Disability Issues

The Conference on Churches and Disability is intended as a forum for churches and PGI’s partner organizations working on disability issues in Indonesia. In the course of the movement there is a process of reflection and sharing experiences in the disability-friendly movement, as well as fighting for their rights.

The church is invited to become an oasis for others and especially for our brothers and sisters with disabilities. The church and partners have a joint commitment and action plan to develop various efforts to mainstream disability inclusion that are more progressive and sustainable.

The PGI has seen more than a decade of conversations and activities developed in order to mainstream disability. Even in line with that, the government issued Law No. 8/2016 on disability which stipulates, “The right to public services for persons with disabilities.”

However, mainstreaming disability issues in church services remains a dream because access for persons with disabilities in services has not been well implemented. This reality is portrayed and becomes the background of the National Conference. In and through this Conference, we will discuss the unfortunate conditions for our brothers and sisters.

Big Implications

With the theme, “Building Inclusive Fellowship and Serving Together as God’s Co-Workers” there are major implications to be achieved, namely a paradigm shift in viewing people with disabilities as subjects, not as objects in the church’s pastoral agenda.

As God’s co-workers, 1 Cor 3:9, Paul identifies himself, we are inviting and facilitating people with disabilities to become co-workers. People with disabilities may have limitations in certain aspects.

“This should not be a barrier for the church to involve them in church services. Isn’t Christ always solidary and siding with those who are weak in such a way?” said Rev. Gomar.

That the church pays attention to this aspect of humanity is the call of the church that cannot be ignored in imitating what Jesus Christ did. Not rejecting those with disabilities, but instead Jesus reached out and embraced them in the loving embrace of a father. Jesus made himself available to be embraced by anyone. Rev. Gomar said, “with variations on what is said in Matthew 25, we hear the Son of Man saying: ‘When I was helpless because of my disability you strengthened me’.”

The IX PGI’s Chairman said, “I hope that through this Conference we can all exchange ideas in an effort to build a shared commitment to humanity and equality.
